PRERANA was started in 1990 by Mr. Pramod Kulkarni (an IIM-Ahmedabad Alumnus). Prerana’s beneficiaries, at the time, were farmers in Raichur who needed aid for their Farming/Irrigation projects.

Translation: The donation of food to the the needy is a great deed, but the donation of knowledge is even greater. The satisfaction derived from food is momentary, but knowledge stays for life.

At Prerana, we believe that education is the most powerful tool to fight poverty. Education gives an underprivileged child the fighting chance to alleviate his/her situation and those of his/her family. This is especially true for meritorious students, who already have the drive to “be better and do better”. Prerana’s mission is to identify such students and empower them to complete their education and develop necessary skills to be work-ready.

Objective: To provide financial help, moral support, mentorship and skill training to meritorious but economically under-privileged students from urban Bangalore and surrounding rural areas.

Strategy: Identify meritorious students after their 10th grade, select them through a Nurture Merit Test (NMT), verify their economic condition by visiting their houses and speaking to their parents and finally enroll them into Prerana Nurture Merit and Nurture Career programs after ascertaining their interest in education and social cause.

Started in 1990, by Mr. Pramod Kulkarni, an IIM-Ahmedabad alumnus, Prerana is currently run by a group of professionals who believe in “परोपकारार्थं यो जीवति स जीवति” (the one who helps the needy lives a meaningful life). Prerana's statutory board is comprised of individuals from diverse backgrounds, who firmly believe in the cause.
